Magnetic Separation

Magnetic separators serve many applications from handling dry bulk materials to high temperature applications.

We offer a wide range of magnets including suspended electromagnets, plates, humps, tubes, grate housings, drum separators, WHIMS, and more.

Eriez Suspended Electromagnets

The Suspended Electromagnet provides tramp metal collection from conveyed materials. The electromagnet is typically mounted or suspended over a conveyor belt to remove large pieces of tramp metal that represent a hazard to downstream crushers, mills, pulverizers and grinders. Suspended electromagnets also remove sharp metal that can damage or tear expensive conveyor belts, especially at transfer points. Product purity is enhanced with the separation power of the suspended electromagnet.

Application Guide

Typical plate magnet installations involve free flowing products cascading down a sloped chute. Use the selection guideline above for thin burdens (up to 5-inches (127 mm)) and slow product flows. Typical installations locate the magnet near the chute entrance to take advantage of the products reduced velocity. For optimum performance, magnets require cleaning at regular intervals. Install them in a readily accessible location.

Eriez Magnetic Humps and Round Pipe Separators

Eriez’ Magnetic Hump and Round Pipe Separators provide a simple and effective way to remove tramp iron contamination from gravity or pneumatically conveyed dry, free flowing products such as feed, grain, wood ships, food stuffs, sand or plastic.

The housing is “dog-legged” on two sides at 45 degrees from a flat plane. Each leg contains a plate magnet hinged and latched to the housing, one on the up stream side and one on the downstream side.

Material enters the magnetic Hump and is forced abruptly to change direction against the face of the powerful plate magnet. As the material tumbles in the housing, it again changes direction and is forced against the face of the second powerful plate magnet. The Hump takes advantage of the ferrous material density because the heavier metallics are more likely to work their way to the face of the magnet, increasing the probability of capture.

The ferrous contamination remains on the face of the magnets until an operator swings the magnet out of the product flow and physically removes the metal.

Features & Benefits:

  • Quick release clamps for easy operation and maintenance
  • Minimized overall height for difficult retrofit installations
  • All welded construction
  • Mild or stainless steel construction
  • Available for gravity, horizontal or vertical pneumatic installations

Pneumatic Humps

The elimination of tramp iron from materials traveling in pneumatic lines is handled effectively by the magnetic Hump. The assembly consists of two powerful magnets in an enclosed rectangular sheet metal housing. Magnets are hinged to the housing and swing open for cleaning. Standard pneumatic Humps are constructed for installation on the suction side of a blower.

Gravity Flow Humps

The gravity flow magnetic Hump is used for tramp iron removal where heavy, loose flowing materials are conveyed in vertical gravity flow chutes.

Installed vertically the unit is highly efficient, since falling material strikes directly against the first magnet, and the subsequent change of direction permits the second magnet to remove any tramp iron not caught by the first.

Round Pipe Separators

The Round Pipe Separator makes the installation of plate magnets in round gravity flow chutes extremely simple and economical. By building the magnet into a housing designed for efficient and effective tramp iron removal, it eliminates installation expense and assures satisfactory results.

The assembly is installed by merely cutting out a section of the chute where magnetic protection is required, and slipping the separator into position. A Neoprene baffle directs the flow directly over the magnet face, which assists in tramp iron removal.

Eriez Grate Magnets

Powerful, permanent magnetic protection against fine and tramp iron contamination. Designed for simple installation in steep-sloped hoppers, odd and irregular shaped hoppers, floor openings, vertical closed chutes, and ducts.

Standard Grate Magnets

For many years Eriez permanent magnet grates have used ceramic or Alnico magnet materials as their energy source. When built with Eriez–designed circuits, these separators provide good magnetic fields for a nominal cost and satisfactorily remove both tramp and fine iron contaminants in most applications. They continue to be the magnets most frequently used to improve the product purity of dry bulk materials.

Xtreme® Rare Earth Grate Magnets

The Xtreme® RE separators available from Eriez remove weakly magnetic or very fine iron contaminants. They have more strength at a greater distance than conventional permanent magnets, higher gradients, and increased holding force. This means they can reach out and attract weakly magnetic or very fine iron contaminants and hold them so tightly that wipe-off by product flow is virtually eliminated.

Sanitary Grate Magnets

Both standard and Xtreme® grate magnets are available in sanitary construction. These units are stainless steel throughout and are carefully manufactured to contain no pits, cracks or crevices in accordance with accepted standards of sanitation for food processing.

Wet Drums for Heavy Media Duty

Wet drums in heavy media applications provide continuous recovery of magnetite or ferrosilicon. Eriez has set the industry standards in the heavy media industry developing both the design criteria of the magnetic circuit and the benchmark of operation. The 750 gauss Interpole magnetic element, developed by Eriez, is the most acclaimed magnet of engineering standards in the industry. Eriez has also set the benchmark for wet drum performance. The culmination of various in–plant tests has demonstrated that the separators will achieve magnetite recoveries in the 99.9+ percent. (This is based on magnetite losses of less than 1 gram/gallon of non–magnetic effluent).

Two basic tank styles are offered. The drum rotates in the same direction as the slurry flow in the concurrent tank style. The slurry enters the feedbox and is channeled underneath the submerged drum. The slurry then flows into the magnetic field generated by the drum. The magnetite is attracted by the magnetic field, collected on the drum surface, and rotated out of the slurry flow. This tank style results in a very clean magnetic product.

The counter–rotation tank style is preferred for heavy media applications. The drum rotates against the slurry flow in the counter–rotation tank style. The slurry enters the feedbox and flows directly into the magnetic field generated by the drum. The magnetite is attracted by the magnetic field, collected on the drum surface, and rotated out of the slurry flow. Any magnetite that is not immediately collected will pass through to a magnetic scavenging zone. The short path that the magnetic material must be conveyed between the feed entry point and the magnetics discharge lip, combined with the magnetic scavenging zone, results in high magnetite recoveries.

Wet Drums for Concentration Duty

Wet drum magnetic separators are the most vital part of the upgrading process in magnetite concentration. The upgrading of primary magnetite is always accomplished with wet drum separators. Mill feed is typically upgraded to 65+ percent magnetic iron using a series of wet drum magnetic separators. The number of magnetic separation stages required to upgrade the ore is dependent on the magnetite content and the liberation characteristics of the ore.

The Eriez Wet Drum Magnetic Separators is engineered and fabricated to provide reliable operation in demanding applications. The separator is designed for the continuous treatment of coarse milled ore providing a high level of availability. The tank and drum are fabricated from heavy gauge stainless steel with wear plate in impact areas. Wear areas are protected with hot vulcanized rubber. The drum utilizes heavy–duty spherical roller bearings with a B–10 life of 100,000+ hours. The drive system utilizes a Mill and Chemical Duty motor coupled to a shaft mounted gear reducer complete with Taconite Seals.

The feed enters the separator at the bottom of the tank and the drum rotates in the same direction as the slurry flow. This tank also has a scavenging zone. The nonmagnetics must migrate through the magnetic field to a full width overflow. This design, with the full width overflow, allows the tank to be self–leveling. There are no tailings spigots that must be adjusted to match the flow of the separator feed. This design is most effective for producing a clean magnetite concentrate. The magnetic element should incorporate several agitating magnetic poles to provide a high degree of cleaning. Since the finisher feed consists of fairly well liberated magnetite, extreme magnetic field strengths are not required for collection.
